Indiana weather can change quickly in fall. A little preparation now can help you spot small issues before colder weather makes them harder to address. Work through this list at a comfortable pace and skip any task that requires unsafe roof access or electrical, gas, or mechanical expertise.
1. Replace or inspect the furnace filter.
Check the filter size and the manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval. A clogged filter can restrict airflow; do not install a filter that does not fit correctly.
2. Test the thermostat and heating system.
Before the first cold stretch, set the thermostat to heat and confirm the system responds normally. If you notice repeated shutdowns, unusual sounds, burning-plastic odors, or poor performance, arrange a professional inspection. If you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.
3. Check smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms.
Test alarms according to their instructions and replace batteries or units when required. Never ignore a carbon-monoxide alarm.
4. Clear leaves from walkways and drains.
Keep exterior drains and ground-level drainage paths clear where safely accessible. Avoid climbing onto a roof or leaning ladders in unsafe conditions.
5. Look for drafts around doors and windows.
Check weatherstripping and caulk for visible gaps. Small air leaks may be improved with suitable weatherstripping or caulk, but do not block required ventilation openings.
6. Disconnect and store garden hoses.
In freezing weather, a hose left connected can contribute to a frozen hose bib. Follow the instructions for your particular faucet or frost-free sillcock.
7. Walk around the property and note changes.
Look for loose handrails, damaged steps, pooling water, missing exterior caulk, or branches near service lines. Keep clear of electrical lines and call the appropriate utility or professional for hazards.
